Good afternoon Printers !!!
I know many of you enjoy behind-the-scenes posts like this
During some recent upgrades to our traction pullers, we discovered a bearing had locked up on one of the traction rollers that very carefully pull the filament to the correct diameter. The failed bearing had worn away the shaft that supports the traction rollers, resulting in damage and noticeable wear to the shaft. Ironically, the bearing was now spinning freely!
A quick trip to our local bearing supplier sorted us out with some lovely SKF bearings to replace the originals (four in total, only one had failed, but the others also felt a bit rough). Then came the important bit.... getting the shaft back up to size!
It really felt like a budget version of "Abom" on YouTube as I laid down a series of weld beads on the shaft and then used our lathe to bring it back to the perfect outside diameter.
All in all, a satisfying fix to a rushed job, as the production line was due to be back up and running by Friday. This repair will likely be absolutely fine, although we’ve gone ahead and ordered a length of the appropriate steel to make a brand new shaft just in case.
As for the AMS system picture, that needs a post of it's own but we're just about ready to release a much simpler printable attachment as seen in the image. We will do a post this week about this to gain a bit of customer feedback as we are thinking of making a move to a different spool design but we will discuss that next .
